Small frontages, long-standing businesses
The Thoroughfare is not a chain high street. It is independent retailers, galleries, delis and long-established local firms, in narrow frontages, in buildings that are frequently listed and almost always in a conservation area. The town draws people down to the Deben and the Tide Mill, and much of the passing trade is on foot and unhurried — which changes what a sign has to do.
A sign read at walking pace, from a few feet, at eye level, is judged on its finish. Nobody is squinting to make out the name from across a car park. What they notice instead is whether the edges are clean, whether the paint is right, and whether the whole thing looks like it belongs on the building or like it was bought from a catalogue.
What suits a frontage like this
Painted or hand-finished fascia panels, individually fixed letters, traditional-look lettering achieved in modern materials that will not lift after a wet winter, and window graphics that give you a name and opening hours without covering the glass. Discreet illumination, or none — a lit box fascia on a timber frontage in a conservation area is usually the wrong answer before anyone has looked at the design.
The other half of the job on a street like this is the constraint nobody mentions until late: the fixings. On a listed or historic frontage where you cannot drill freely, how the sign attaches decides what the sign can be, and it is worth settling that at survey rather than at installation.
Taking over a frontage somebody else fitted
On a street of older buildings, most new signage is not going onto bare masonry. It is going where the last business's sign was, and what is behind that panel is not known until it comes off: previous fixing holes, patched render, a timber fascia in worse condition than it looked, or paintwork that has only been maintained where the old sign did not cover it.
That is worth expecting rather than discovering. Removing the old sign, making good what is behind it and fitting the new one is one job, and treating it as one job is the difference between a clean frontage and a new sign with the outline of the old one showing around it.
