Signs in Sudbury
A market town that still manufactures — and the two frontages want different things.
Shop frontage and works frontage
Sudbury has kept something most Suffolk market towns lost: it still makes things. Silk weaving has been carried on here for generations, and the town's industrial side sits alongside a working market place and the retail around it. A signmaker meets both, and they are not variations of the same brief.
A works or factory frontage is read at distance, often from a road, and its job is usually identification rather than persuasion: the company name, large, durable, and legible against a large building. Retail on and around the market place is the opposite — close range, competing with the shop either side, and judged on whether the frontage looks like somewhere worth walking into.
Signage that is meant to come down again
Market towns run on things that happen on a date. Markets, fairs, seasonal trade, a shop opening, a stand at an event. Banners and temporary graphics do that work, and they are worth specifying properly rather than treating as throwaway: hemmed and eyeletted so the wind does not tear them off the fixings, printed so the colour survives a season outdoors, and sized to the gap they are actually going in.
The same applies to window graphics for a promotion — cut vinyl that comes off cleanly at the end of the run, without leaving adhesive shadow on the glass for the next twelve months.
Inside the building, not only on the front
A works or a larger premises has a second signage problem that nobody costs at the start: everything past the front door. Where reception is, which door is the office and which is the floor, where visitors are allowed and where they are not, and the safety and statutory notices that have to be legible and in the right place rather than laminated and taped to a wall.
Done as an afterthought it looks like an afterthought, and it is usually the first thing a visitor or an auditor sees at close range. Done as part of the same specification as the frontage, it carries the same typeface and the same colours, and the building reads as one business rather than as a sign at the front and a corridor of printouts behind it.
